In 2018, a cultural journey provided an exploration of the cultural, religious, and architectural diversity of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in southern India. This trip, spanning coastal towns and spiritual sites, offered a rich insight into the history and daily life of the region.

The journey began in Kerala, starting in Kochi, where colonial heritage is visible in historic neighborhoods, particularly in Fort Kochi, showcasing a blend of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influences with local culture. Then, Kottayam and Peermade revealed landscapes of tea and spice plantations characteristic of Kerala’s highlands. In Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the state’s capital, visits to temples and museums offered insight into the cultural and religious significance of the area.

In Tamil Nadu, the city of Madurai with its famous Meenakshi Temple was a highlight. Stops in Kanchipuram and Chidambaram provided a glimpse into ancient dynasties and Dravidian architecture through their grand temples. Pondicherry, with its French heritage, introduced a different atmosphere, while Tharangambadi (Tranquebar), a former Danish settlement, and Chettinad, known for its traditional mansions, added unique colonial dimensions.

The towns of Mahabalipuram, with its rock-cut sculptures and ancient temples, Thanjavur with its Brihadeeswara Temple, and Tiruchirappalli completed the journey by showcasing the rich art and architecture of Tamil Nadu.

This 2018 journey through Kerala and Tamil Nadu allowed for an exploration of South India’s cultural and religious traditions, revealing a diversity of architectural styles and unique historical landscapes.
