South India • Kerala and Tamil Nadu

After four trips to North India, this is our first trip to South India.

Until now, we have looked in vain for the multicolored temples that India is famous for and for good reason ... these temples only exist in southern India.

With our visit to Kerala and especially Tamil Nadu we were served. Huge temples covered with painted statues, especially in Tamil Nadu.

Madurai, Kanchipuram, Mahabalipuram. Thanjavur, Thuckalay, Tiruchirappalli, Tharangambadi are some of the cities visited.

For temples, Madurai, Chidambaram and Tiruchirappalli (among others) offer magnificent examples of these painted temples (and repainted after a few years).

Kerala has more impressed us with the quality of its spices, its many Christian churches, its Kathakali shows and especially by its tangle of canals (Backwaters).

Again, two neighboring states but so different from each other.
