Reading the text below will help you better understand the natural context of the images in this video.
Sikkim border
The Teesta River which cuts the city in two serves as the border between Sikkim and West Bengal. Part of the city is therefore in Sikkim while the other is part of West Bengal.
The second largest bridge in Sikkim, the Jawaharlal Nehru Bridge connects the two sides.
Melli is the main point of entry into Sikkim and a mandatory stop for all tourists who need to pick up a stamp on their passport upon entering the state.
This is the opportunity to meet young Buddhist monks strolling on the bridge or a group of women in traditional clothes.
Roads in Sikkim
The contrast between the state of the roads in West Bengal and those in Sikkim is striking. During our visit in 2018, major road works were undertaken to improve road traffic in the region. The typical relief of this state located at the foot of the Himalayas obviously does not facilitate this work. But at the same time this same relief pleads for the improvement of roads and road safety.
Spoken comments in the film:
Sikkim lies at the foot of the Himalayas, and once you cross the border, you face some really necessary road repair works. Necessary, even if it wastes a lot of time.
