Ravangla, Tathagata Tsal

In the heart of the Himalayas, the "Ravangla Buddha Park", alternatively known as Tathagata Tsal, stands as a beacon of peace and spirituality. Opened in 2013 by the Dalai Lama himself, this sanctuary sprawls across a serene expanse near Rambong, offering visitors a tranquil haven. The realization of this architectural marvel took almost seven years, from 2006 to 2013. Dominating the park is a majestic 40-meter tall Buddha statue, constructed in commemoration of Buddha's 2550th birth anniversary.

The decision for its location was deeply intentional. Nestled within the sacred grounds of the Rabong Monastery complex, the statue provides a significant draw for both tourists and the devout. In close vicinity, one can also find the revered Tibetan Ralang Monastery, bearing testament to the region's rich Buddhist heritage. Over centuries, these monasteries have served as spiritual lighthouses, guiding countless Buddhist pilgrims on their journey.

The park's name, "Tathagata Tsal", is no casual selection either; it echoes one of Buddha's revered titles, signifying his enlightened journey. This monumental venture became a reality due to the combined financial efforts of both the Sikkim government and its devoted citizens, showcasing the harmony and collaboration that epitomizes this region.

Ravangla and the Tibetans

Nestled at a lofty 2000 meters amidst the breathtaking Indian Himalayas, Ravangla paints a vivid tapestry of culture and history. As a Buddhist territory sharing its borders with Tibet, it comes as no surprise that Sikkim opened its heart to Tibetan refugees, fleeing political upheaval in 1959. These developments, a direct fallout of the Chinese military aggression in Tibet during 1950-1951, led to the establishment of refugee camps. One such prominent camp finds its home in Ravangla, standing as a testament to Sikkim's enduring support for the Tibetan community.

about the place, Ravangla:

About 65 kilometers from the capital Gangtok, Ravangla is a small hill town on the crossroads to various tourist spots in Sikkim. It is a popular place for hikers.

Spoken comments in the film:

Located between Gangtok and Pelling, the small town of Ravangla hosts one of the main camps for Tibetans, exiled since 1959, following the failure of the rebellion against China.
