Sawai Jai Singh (1688-1743)

Sawai Jai Singh was the Maharaja of Amber and later Jaipur from 1699 to 1743. He is best known for founding the city of Jaipur and for his significant contributions to astronomy and architecture.

He is renowned for founding the city of Jaipur in 1727, which became India's first planned city. Jai Singh had a profound interest in astronomy and constructed five astronomical observatories called Jantar Mantar in Delhi, Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura.

His architectural contributions also include the City Palace in Jaipur and the royal gardens. Jai Singh invited European experts and obtained scientific manuscripts to modernize Indian astronomy, incorporating Western techniques and knowledge into Indian science. His reign was marked by administrative reforms and significant economic prosperity.
