Qila

A qila is an Urdu and Hindi term for a fortress or fort, commonly used in the Indian subcontinent to refer to major defensive structures.

Qilas are significant military constructions in Indian history, built to protect kingdoms from invasions. Often situated in strategic locations such as hillsides or near water bodies, these forts combine defensive functions with architectural refinement. The materials used range widely from mud to bricks and stones, depending on the era and local availability. Some of the most famous qilas include the Red Fort in Delhi and the Agra Fort, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, reflecting their cultural and historical importance.
