Nikumbha refers to a Rajput lineage associated with the historical traditions of Abhaneri in Rajasthan. The name is especially useful for understanding the traditional attribution of the Chand Baori stepwell to King Chanda or Chandra of the Nikumbha dynasty.

The term Nikumbha refers to a Rajput lineage mentioned in the regional history of Rajasthan. In an architectural and heritage context, it is particularly relevant to Abhaneri, an ancient settlement in eastern Rajasthan known for the Chand Baori stepwell and the Harshat Mata temple. According to local traditions and several historical notices, Chand Baori was built by a king named Chanda or Chandra, generally associated with the Nikumbha dynasty, around the eighth or ninth century.

This association makes Nikumbha a useful term for placing Chand Baori within its traditional political setting. The monument is not only remarkable for its depth, geometric design and system of stairways; it also belongs to a historical landscape connected with the Rajput lineages of medieval Rajasthan. Abhaneri, sometimes interpreted as an older form of Abha-Nagari, appears in this context as a regional centre controlled by local powers before being absorbed into wider political formations.

The link between the Nikumbhas and the Chahamanas, or Chauhans, should be presented with caution. Some traditions connect them with the Chahamana environment of Rajasthan, while others describe them as a distinct Rajput lineage. It is therefore preferable to treat them as a regional line associated with Abhaneri and sometimes linked to Chauhan traditions, without asserting a fully established genealogy when the sources remain uncertain.

The Nikumbhas do not appear to have formed a large empire comparable to the major dynasties of medieval northern India. Their importance belongs rather to the history of local powers, fortresses, sanctuaries and hydraulic monuments. Like many regional Rajput lineages, they probably exercised limited but significant authority over specific territories, connected with routes, villages, places of worship and water resources.
