sardar	A sardar is a military and honorific title used in several parts of Asia, particularly in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Depending on the historical period and regional context, it referred to a military commander, a local leader, a noble or a high-ranking dignitary. The word sardar derives from the Persian sar-dār, combining sar ("head" or "chief") and dār ("holder"), literally meaning "one who is at the head". Through Persian and Islamic political traditions, the title spread across much of South Asia. In the Muslim sultanates and empires of the Indian subcontinent, the title was commonly granted to military commanders, provincial governors and influential nobles responsible for territories or armed forces. Although its precise status differed from one state to another, it generally denoted a person exercising political or military authority. Among the Sikhs, the title acquired particular importance during the eighteenth century. The leaders of the various Sikh misls, the military confederacies that dominated Punjab before the rise of the Sikh Empire, were widely known as sardars. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, founder of the Ahluwalia power, and Hari Singh Nalwa, one of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's most distinguished generals, are among the best-known historical figures to bear the title. Unlike titles such as raja, maharaja, nawab or sultan, however, sardar was not inherently a sovereign title. A sardar might command armies, govern territories or wield considerable political influence without being an independent ruler. During British rule, the title remained in widespread use. In some instances it was formally conferred by the colonial administration as a mark of distinction, while elsewhere it continued as a traditional designation. Today, sardar is still used as a respectful form of address, especially within Sikh communities.
