| Yasodharapura | Yasodharapura is the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, located at the Angkor site in Cambodia. Founded by King Yasovarman I in the 9th century, it served as the political and religious center of the empire. Yasodharapura, founded in the 9th century by King Yasovarman I, was one of the first capitals of the Khmer Empire, located at the Angkor site in Cambodia. The name "Yasodharapura" means "the city of Yasodhara," referring to either the Buddha or the king's wife, symbolizing the spiritual and political greatness of its founding king. The city was designed according to Hindu cosmological principles, with a grid plan centered around Mount Meru, considered the axis of the world. Yasodharapura underwent several phases of development, particularly under the reign of Suryavarman II, the builder of Angkor Wat, and Jayavarman VII, who transformed the city into a Mahayana Buddhist center with the construction of the Bayon. The city flourished until the 14th century before declining as the political center of the Khmer kingdom shifted. |
