| Murugan | Murugan is a major deity in Hinduism, particularly revered in South India and among Tamils. He is the god of war and victory. Murugan, also known as Kartikeya, Skanda, and Subramanya, is a major deity in Hinduism. He is the son of the god Shiva and the goddess Parvati, and the younger brother of Ganesha. Murugan is often depicted as a brave and handsome young man, riding a peacock and carrying a spear called Vel, which symbolizes knowledge and justice. His most famous legend narrates his birth to destroy the demon Surapadman, thus restoring peace and order to the heavens and the earth. Murugan is particularly revered in South India and among the Tamil diaspora, where he is honored during festivals such as Thaipusam and Cavadee. His main temples are located in Palani, Tiruttani, Swamimalai, Thiruchendur, Thiruparankundram, and Palamuthircholai, collectively known as the "Arupadai Veedu" (the six abodes of Murugan). |
