Mahishasura

Mahishasura is a demon in Hindu mythology, often depicted as a half-man, half-buffalo, known for his defeat at the hands of the goddess Durga.

Mahishasura is a legendary demon in Hindu mythology, famous for his epic battle against the goddess Durga. According to legend, Mahishasura was the son of the buffalo goddess Mahishi and an asura (demon). Endowed with great strength and magical powers, he could transform himself into a man or a buffalo at will. Through years of penance and devotion to Brahma, he was granted the boon that he could not be killed by any man or god, making him nearly invincible.

Empowered by this boon, Mahishasura conquered the three worlds (heaven, earth, and the underworld), spreading terror among gods and humans. Unable to defeat him, the gods turned to the goddess Durga for help. Created from the combined energies of the principal gods, Durga possessed the power of each deity.

Durga and Mahishasura engaged in a fierce battle that lasted nine days and nights. Finally, Durga defeated Mahishasura by decapitating him with her trident. This victory symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated annually during the festivals of Navratri and Durga Puja. Mahishasura is often depicted in Hindu art and sculpture, his image serving as a reminder of the victory of virtue over malice.
