yakshi

Yakshis are female spirits in Indian mythology, often associated with nature, fertility, and the protection of hidden treasures.

Yakshis, or Yakshini in Sanskrit, are mythological female spirits in the religious traditions of India, particularly in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. They are often depicted as beautiful, benevolent women symbolizing nature, fertility, and abundance. Yakshis are commonly associated with vegetation, trees, rivers, and mountains, and are revered as guardians of natural and hidden treasures.

In Indian art and architecture, Yakshis are frequently carved on stupas, temples, and monasteries, highlighting their cultural and religious significance. One of the most famous representations of a Yakshi is the Didarganj Yakshi, a polished sandstone statue from the Maurya Empire.

Besides their benevolent aspects, some legends describe Yakshis as protective yet potentially dangerous spirits if provoked or neglected. They are often invoked in rituals to ensure prosperity and protection.

Yakshis play a crucial role in Indian mythology by representing the duality of nature—both nurturing and destructive—and embodying the vital and spiritual forces of the natural world.
