Term Definition
Vasudeva

Vasudeva is a major figure in Hindu mythology, known as the father of Lord Krishna and a central character in epic and sacred Hindu texts.

Vasudeva is a key character in Hindu mythology, particularly in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana, and other sacred texts. He is the biological father of Krishna, one of the avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu. Married to Devaki, Vasudeva is imprisoned by King Kamsa, who fears a prophecy foretelling his death at the hands of Devaki's eighth child. To protect Krishna, Vasudeva secretly transports him to Gokul, where he is raised by Nanda and Yashoda. The name "Vasudeva" is also used to refer to Krishna himself, meaning "son of Vasudeva." In certain philosophical contexts, "Vāsudeva" is a term used to denote the supreme and omnipresent aspect of Vishnu.
