Tu Duc

Tu Duc, born Nguyễn Phúc Hồng Nhậm in 1829 and died in 1883, was the Emperor of Vietnam from 1847 to 1883. Known for his long reign and philosophical governance style, he was also a prolific poet.

Tu Duc, fully named Nguyễn Phúc Hồng Nhậm, ruled Vietnam from 1847 to 1883, making him one of the longest-serving monarchs of the Nguyen dynasty. His reign was marked by internal challenges and external pressures, particularly increasing colonial encroachments by the French. A staunch advocate of Confucian tradition, this deeply influenced his policies and governance. As a poet, he left behind a rich literary legacy, but his reign also saw Vietnam beginning to lose its autonomy to French colonization, culminating in the establishment of the French protectorate. The Mausoleum of Tu Duc, which he designed himself as a retreat, is a striking example of the period's Vietnamese architecture and reflects his artistic and philosophical vision.
