| Thonburi | Thonburi, located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is a historic area of Bangkok, known for its quieter, less urbanized atmosphere compared to the bustling city center of the Thai capital. Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam in 1767 by King Taksin following the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese. This capital status was short-lived, however, as in 1782, King Rama I moved the capital across the river to establish what is now modern Bangkok. Thonburi has remained a significant residential area, famous for its canals (khlongs), which have earned it the nickname "Venice of the East." It is also home to many historic temples, such as Wat Arun, one of Thailand's most iconic. |
