Rama I

Rama I, also known as Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, is the founder of the Chakri dynasty and the first king of modern Thailand, reigning from 1782 to 1809.

Rama I, whose full name is Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, was born on March 20, 1737, and died on September 7, 1809. He is the founder of the Chakri dynasty, which still reigns in Thailand today. Before ascending the throne, Rama I was a prominent general under King Taksin's rule. In 1782, following a period of political turmoil, he became king and established Bangkok as the new capital of the kingdom. His reign, lasting from 1782 to 1809, was marked by administrative reforms, the consolidation of royal power, and the promotion of Buddhism. Rama I is also known for his cultural contributions, including the revision of the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures) and the compilation of the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana. Under his rule, the Kingdom of Siam (the former name of Thailand) experienced a period of stability and cultural renaissance.
