Term Definition
Svetambar

Svetambar is one of the two main sects of Jainism, known for its moderate ascetic practices and for allowing its monks to wear white clothes.

Svetambar, also spelled Shvetambar, is one of the two main sects of Jainism, the other being the Digambar sect. The term "Svetambar" means "clothed in white" in Sanskrit, referring to the practice of its monks wearing simple white clothes. This sect is known for its moderate ascetic practices compared to the Digambar, who renounce all forms of clothing. Svetambars believe that strict asceticism is not necessary to achieve spiritual liberation (moksha). Svetambar temples are often richly decorated with sculptures and frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of the Tirthankaras, the spiritual masters of Jainism. Svetambars also accept women as monks, which distinguishes them from the Digambars. This sect is predominantly found in the regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan in India. Svetambar temples, such as the famous Ranakpur temple, are remarkable examples of Jain architecture.
