According to legend, Sundareswarar appeared in Madurai to marry the goddess Meenakshi, an incarnation of Parvati. Their union symbolizes divine harmony and unity. Sundareswarar, whose name means "the Lord of Beauty," is often depicted with Meenakshi during the Chithirai festival, which celebrates their marriage. As an incarnation of Shiva, Sundareswarar's parents are considered to be Parvati and the supreme god himself. Sundareswarar and Meenakshi do not have children mentioned in the main legends.
