Pagan Dynasty

The Pagan Dynasty was a Burmese royal dynasty that ruled the Pagan Kingdom, the first unified Burmese empire, from 849 to 1297.

The Pagan Dynasty, also known as the Bagan Dynasty, ruled the Pagan Kingdom in present-day Myanmar from 849 to 1297. Founded by King Anawrahta, this dynasty is credited with unifying the fragmented regions of the Irrawaddy, thereby establishing the first Burmese empire. Under the reign of Anawrahta and his successors, Pagan became a major religious and cultural center, with the construction of thousands of temples, pagodas, and monasteries. The most prosperous period of the dynasty occurred between the 11th and 13th centuries, when Pagan became a flourishing center of Buddhist architecture. The decline of the dynasty began with the Mongol invasions from 1277 to 1287, which significantly weakened the kingdom. In 1297, the Pagan Dynasty came to an end when the kingdom was conquered by neighboring states. The legacy of the dynasty is still visible today, with the architectural remains of the Bagan plain, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
