Mehmet | Mehmet II, also known as Mehmet the Conqueror, was an Ottoman sultan who reigned from 1444 to 1446 and from 1451 to 1481. He is renowned for conquering Constantinople in 1453, ending the Byzantine Empire. Mehmet II, born on March 30, 1432, and died on May 3, 1481, was an Ottoman sultan known as Mehmet the Conqueror (Mehmet Fatih). His full name was Mehmed bin Murad. He reigned twice: first from 1444 to 1446, then from 1451 to 1481. His reign is particularly marked by the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, a major event that ended the Byzantine Empire and transformed the city into the capital of the Ottoman Empire under the name Istanbul. Mehmet II also pursued military campaigns in Anatolia and the Balkans, significantly expanding Ottoman territory. In addition to his military achievements, he encouraged art, culture, and architecture, commissioning many iconic buildings such as the Topkapi Palace. Mehmet II is regarded as one of the greatest Ottoman sultans, having laid the foundations for an empire that would last for several centuries. |
