Term Definition
Kathiawar

Kathiawar is a peninsula in western India, located in today’s state of Gujarat and bordered by the Arabian Sea.

Kathiawar is a peninsula on the western coast of India, forming a large part of modern Gujarat. It is bounded by the Gulf of Kutch to the northwest, the Gulf of Khambhat to the southeast, and the Arabian Sea to the west and south. Its position made it an important maritime hub linking India with trade routes to the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa.

Historically, Kathiawar was home to several regional dynasties and kingdoms. Powers such as the Maitrakas, the Chudasamas, and later the Gujarat Sultanate successively controlled the region. In the early modern period, Portuguese traders established themselves in Diu, followed later by British colonial rule.

Culturally, Kathiawar has been a meeting place of Hinduism, Islam, and Jainism, with each leaving visible legacies. Economically, it thrived on maritime trade, agriculture, and crafts such as cotton production. Today, Kathiawar is part of Gujarat but retains a distinct historical and cultural identity.
