Kalachuris of Kalyani

The Kalachuris of Kalyani were a regional Deccan dynasty active in the 12th century, briefly powerful after the fall of the Western Chalukyas.

The Kalachuris of Kalyani, also known as the Kalachuris of Karnataka, were a regional dynasty active in the 12th century CE, in the southern Deccan, primarily in what is now Karnataka. They rose to prominence as former feudatories of the Western Chalukyas, taking control after the collapse of Chalukya authority around 1156.

Their most prominent ruler, Bijjala II, a former Chalukya minister, declared independence and ruled from Kalyani (modern Basavakalyan). His reign is closely associated with the Lingayat movement, initiated by Basava, a social and religious reformer whom Bijjala patronized, though tensions arose between the king and the movement’s leaders.

The dynasty fell rapidly after Bijjala’s death, and by around 1184 it had vanished. Although not related to the northern Kalachuris, they adopted the name to strengthen their political and ideological legitimacy.
