| Northern Kalachuris | The Northern Kalachuris were a regional dynasty active in northern India between the 9th and 11th centuries, possibly related to the Kalachuris of Tripuri. The Northern Kalachuris, also known as the Kalachuris of Sarayupara, were a regional dynasty ruling between the 9th and 11th centuries CE in northern Uttar Pradesh, mainly along the Sarayu River valley. Their capital is thought to have been located at Ujjainakoti, though the precise site remains uncertain. While their direct connection to other Kalachuri branches (especially Tripuri) is debated, their inscriptions and titles indicate a shared dynastic heritage. They played a secondary but regionally significant role, engaging in alliances or conflicts with dominant powers such as the Gurjara-Pratiharas, the Palas, and the Chandelas. Few architectural remains are definitively linked to them, but their epigraphy reflects a classical use of Sanskrit and a political ideology grounded in Hindu dharma. The dynasty faded by the late 11th century, likely integrated into larger neighbouring polities. |
