Indira Gandhi (1917-1984)

Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, and died on October 31, 1984, was the first and only female Prime Minister of India. She led the country from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. Known for her economic policies and strong leadership, she left a significant mark on Indian history.

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (1917-1984)

Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, India, was the only daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. Known as the "Iron Lady" of India, she was a central figure in Indian politics. Indira Gandhi became the first female Prime Minister of India in 1966, succeeding Lal Bahadur Shastri.

She held the position until 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. During her tenure, she implemented significant economic reforms, including the nationalization of banks and the promotion of the Green Revolution to increase India's food production. Her rule was also marked by the declaration of the Emergency from 1975 to 1977, during which civil liberties were suspended and political opposition was suppressed.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards, an act of retaliation following her order to storm the Golden Temple in Amritsar, a sacred Sikh site, to evict militants. She remains a controversial yet influential figure in Indian history.

Indira Gandhi bore the name Gandhi not because of any direct familial connection to Mahatma Gandhi, but because she married Feroze Gandhi, an Indian politician unrelated to Mahatma Gandhi.
