Harsha

Harsha, or Harshavardhana, was an Indian ruler who reigned from 606 to 647 over a large part of northern India. He belonged to the Vardhana dynasty, succeeding his brother Rajyavardhana after a dynastic crisis. His reign marked a renewed effort at political unity following the Gupta Empire’s fragmentation.

He moved the capital to Kannauj, established a flexible imperial rule, and engaged in diplomacy with Tang China. Harsha was also a learned patron, authoring Sanskrit plays and supporting Buddhism while remaining personally Hindu.

Although he did not establish a new dynasty, Harsha’s reign is treated on this site as a distinct dynastic entry due to its political scale and cultural significance. This complements the entry on the Vardhana dynasty, of which he was a member.
