| Carthaginians | The Carthaginians were an ancient people from Carthage, a powerful city-state located in present-day Tunisia. The Carthaginians were the inhabitants of Carthage, a city founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BC. Carthage quickly became a dominant maritime and commercial power in the western Mediterranean. The Carthaginians excelled in navigation, trade, and warfare, establishing a vast network of colonies and trading posts. Their civilization peaked between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC before coming into conflict with Rome in a series of wars known as the Punic Wars. After their final defeat in 146 BC, Carthage was destroyed and incorporated into the Roman Empire. Despite this, Carthaginian culture left a lasting impact on Mediterranean history. |
