Aretas IV

Aretas IV was one of the most influential kings of the Nabataean kingdom, reigning from 9 BCE to 40 CE. He is known for significantly developing Petra and strengthening the economic and political power of his kingdom.

Aretas IV Philopatris ruled the Nabataean kingdom from 9 BCE to 40 CE. His reign is often regarded as the golden age of the Nabataeans. Under his leadership, Petra, the kingdom's capital, flourished due to its strategic location along trade routes connecting Arabia, the Mediterranean, and Egypt. Aretas IV pursued a policy of consolidating his power, notably by aligning with Rome and resisting the influence of Herod's kingdom in Judea. He is also known for his architectural accomplishments, overseeing the construction of monumental structures, some of which still stand in Petra today. His coinage often depicted him with the title "Philopatris," meaning "lover of his country," reflecting his dedication to Nabataean culture and identity.
