According to the legend, Vishnu rests in a state of yogic sleep (yoganidra) during the interval between the destruction and creation of the universe. This posture symbolizes the preservation and balance of the universe. Vishnu is often accompanied by his consorts, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Bhudevi, the goddess of the earth. Vishnu, as the protector and preserver, watches over the universe, ready to intervene in case of cosmic disorder.
