| Amitabha | Amitabha, also known as Amitāyus, is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism, particularly revered in Pure Land Buddhism traditions. He is symbolized as the Buddha of infinite light and life. Amitabha, whose name means "Infinite Light," is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas of Mahayana Buddhism, and he is especially significant in Pure Land schools, where he promises salvation and rebirth in his pure land or paradise, Sukhavati, to those who believe in him and recite his name. This belief is centered on meditation and the recitation of Amitabha's name as a way to access this pure land after death. The worship of Amitabha is widespread in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. His depictions are often accompanied by two bodhisattvas, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta, illustrating his promise of mercy and wisdom. |
