nirvana

Nirvana is a central concept in Buddhism referring to the ultimate state of liberation and inner peace achieved by extinguishing desire and suffering.

n the Buddhist context, nirvana is the ultimate state of spiritual liberation where an individual is freed from the cycle of rebirth (samsara) and the suffering associated with conditioned existence. Achieving nirvana means extinguishing all desires, attachments, and ignorance, which are the causes of suffering according to the Buddha's teachings. Nirvana is described as a state of peace, serenity, and absolute freedom, free from all forms of suffering and mental disturbances. Unlike merely ceasing to exist, nirvana represents the complete realization of wisdom and compassion. There are different interpretations of nirvana in various Buddhist schools. In Theravada, it is primarily seen as the extinction of mental afflictions, while in Mahayana, it is often associated with the Buddha-nature present in all beings. Parinirvana, or "final nirvana," is achieved at the death of a fully awakened Buddha or arhat, marking the complete and final liberation from samsara.
