| hieratic | Hieratic script is a simplified form of Egyptian hieroglyphs used for administrative and religious writings on papyrus. Developed from hieroglyphs around 2700 BCE, hieratic script was primarily used by priests and scribes for administrative documents and religious texts. Being more cursive and quicker to write than hieroglyphs, hieratic was suited for writing on papyrus, facilitating record keeping and the copying of religious texts. Over time, demotic, an even more simplified script, began to replace hieratic for most uses around 700 BCE. |
