Term Definition
demotic

Demotic is a simplified and cursive form of Egyptian writing, used from 650 BC to the 5th century AD.

Demotic script was developed as a simpler and faster version of the hieratic script and was used for everyday documentation as well as literature. This script facilitated quicker and smoother writing, suited to business transactions, legal documents, and daily life communications. Demotic was extensively used during the Ptolemaic period and continued through the Roman conquest of Egypt. Over time, it was replaced by Greek as Hellenization in the region deepened.
