Term Definition
Deva

A Deva is a deity or celestial being in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Devas are often depicted as benevolent entities, superior to humans but subordinate to supreme deities.

The term "Deva" comes from Sanskrit and literally means "shining one" or "divine." In the religious traditions of India, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, Devas are celestial beings who inhabit the higher realms of existence. They are often seen as guardians of nature and protectors of dharma (cosmic and social order). Although they possess supernatural powers and are superior to humans, Devas are not eternal beings and are subject to the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, just like any other living being. In Hinduism, some Devas play specific roles in the pantheon, such as Indra, the king of the Devas and the god of the sky. In Buddhism, Devas reside in various heavenly realms, where they live in peace until their positive karma is exhausted. In Jainism, Devas are also regarded as celestial beings but are subordinate to the liberated souls (Jina).
