Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881) reigned from 1855 to 1881. Known for abolishing serfdom in 1861, he is often referred to as "the Liberator".

Alexander II Nikolaevich, born on April 29, 1818, and died on March 13, 1881, was the Tsar of Russia from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. The son of Nicholas I, he is best known for abolishing serfdom in Russia in 1861, a major reform that freed millions of serfs and transformed Russian society. Alexander II also undertook judicial, military, and administrative reforms to modernize Russia. Despite his progressive reforms, his reign was marked by increasing political tensions and repeated assassination attempts. On March 13, 1881, he was assassinated in Saint Petersburg by members of the revolutionary group Narodnaya Volya. Alexander II is often referred to as "the Liberator" for his crucial role in the abolition of serfdom.
