Thich Quang Duc

Thich Quang Duc (1897-1963) was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk known for his protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government, which culminated in his self-immolation in Saigon in 1963.

Thich Quang Duc, born in 1897 in Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam, became globally renowned after he set himself on fire on June 11, 1963, at a busy intersection in Saigon. This act was a protest against the discriminatory policies of President Ngo Dinh Diem, who favored the Catholic minority and oppressed the Buddhist majority in South Vietnam. Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation was extensively covered by the international media, becoming a powerful symbol of civil resistance. It also heightened the political crisis in South Vietnam, ultimately contributing to the fall of the Diem regime. Thich Quang Duc remains a symbol of peace and non-violent resistance.
