Selim II

Born on May 28, 1524, and passed away on December 15, 1574, Selim II was an Ottoman Sultan whose reign lasted from 1566 to 1574. Known as "Selim the Drunkard" due to his fondness for alcohol, he is noted for his architectural contributions and fewer military campaigns compared to his predecessors.

Also known as Selim the Sot, Selim II was born in Constantinople, the son of Süleyman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan. He ascended to the Ottoman throne in 1566 following his father's death. His reign was marked not by military achievements but by cultural and architectural advancement, including the construction of several significant mosques. His reign also witnessed the naval defeat at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a turning point in Ottoman maritime dominance in the Mediterranean.
