| Sailendra | The Sailendra dynasty ruled over Java and parts of Sumatra, Indonesia, between the 8th and 9th centuries. This Buddhist dynasty is renowned for building major monuments, including the famous Borobudur temple. The Sailendra dynasty ruled much of central Java and parts of Sumatra from the 8th to the 9th century. Although their origins are uncertain, the Sailendra are generally associated with Mahayana Buddhism. Their influence is particularly evident in the construction of religious monuments, most notably the Borobudur temple, one of the largest Buddhist shrines in the world, built in the 9th century. The Sailendra dynasty maintained trade and cultural relations with other Buddhist kingdoms in the region, including those in Cambodia and India. Their reign was marked by a period of economic prosperity, facilitated by control of maritime trade routes. The Sailendra dynasty sometimes competed with the Hindu Sanjaya dynasty for control over Java, though there were periods of peaceful coexistence. Their influence began to decline in the 9th century as the Sanjaya dynasty regained power and Buddhist dynasties in Indonesia gradually lost prominence. |
