He reigned from 1130 until his death, founding a powerful, multi-ethnic, and multicultural kingdom. Born in Mileto, Calabria, Roger II was the son of Roger I of Sicily, a Norman leader, and Adelaide del Vasto. His coronation in 1130 marked the beginning of his reign as the first Norman king of Sicily, unifying both the island and southern Italy under his rule. His governance is noted for significant Norman cultural and architectural achievements, alongside influences from Latin, Greek, Muslim, and Jewish populations. Roger II was also a skilled diplomat and military strategist, expanding his kingdom and consolidating his power. Often referred to as "the Great Count" before his kingship, his legacy laid the groundwork for a prosperous, culturally diverse state, making Sicily a hub of Mediterranean culture. |
