Ramesses II, also known as Ramesses the Great, was born around 1303 BCE and died in 1213 BCE. His reign, beginning in 1279 BCE and lasting nearly 66 years, is among the longest in Egyptian history. Son of Seti I, he is renowned for his military campaigns, notably the Battle of Kadesh against the Hittites, which led to the first recorded peace treaty. An ambitious builder, he left a monumental legacy with the Abu Simbel complex, the Ramesseum, and additions to the Karnak and Luxor temples.
