Peshwas of Pune

The Peshwas of Pune were the hereditary prime ministers of the Maratha Empire from the early 18th to the early 19th century, holding central political and military authority.

Initially appointed by the Chhatrapati as chief ministers, the office of Peshwa became hereditary in 1713 under Balaji Vishwanath. Based in Pune, the Peshwas eventually concentrated nearly all executive power of the Maratha Empire, with the ruler of Satara retaining only a ceremonial role.

Under Baji Rao I, Maratha military power reached its zenith, expanding from the Deccan to northern India. The Peshwas oversaw finance, diplomacy, and military campaigns while coordinating with powerful Maratha chiefs such as the Scindia, Holkar, Gaekwad, and Bhonsle.

Their administration combined tributary networks and allied military forces, strengthening Maratha authority through victorious campaigns and centralized governance from Pune. However, internal rivalries and defeat in the Third Anglo‑Maratha War (1817‑1818) led to the deposition of Baji Rao II and the abolition of the office, with Pune coming under British control.

The Peshwas’ legacy lies in their role as architects of Maratha unity and administrators of a vast multi‑regional empire at its height.
