Term Definition
Pala

"Pala" refers to two distinct Indian dynasties: the Bengal Palas (8th-12th century), known for their support of Buddhism, and the Pala of Kamarupa (10th-12th century) who ruled over Assam.

The term "Pala" refers to two significant dynasties in Indian history. The first, the Pala dynasty of Bengal, ruled from the 8th to the 12th century, founded by Gopala. It dominated Bengal and Bihar, actively promoting Buddhism and constructing numerous monasteries and temples, most notably at Nalanda. Under rulers such as Dharmapala and Devapala, the dynasty exerted substantial cultural influence in India and Southeast Asia.

The second dynasty, known as the Pala of Kamarupa, ruled between the 10th and 12th centuries in what is now Assam. Although sharing the same name, this dynasty was independent and distinct, focusing primarily on consolidating power in northeastern India. The Pala of Kamarupa strengthened Hinduism in the region and left a significant cultural and political legacy in Assam.
