| Nek Chand | Nek Chand Saini (December 15, 1924 - June 12, 2015) was an Indian artist and public works official, best known for creating the Rock Garden in Chandigarh, a sculpture garden made from recycled materials. Nek Chand Saini was born on December 15, 1924, in Berian Kalan, Punjab, British India. After the partition of India in 1947, he moved to Chandigarh where he worked as a public works inspector. In 1957, Nek Chand began collecting discarded materials from demolition sites in Chandigarh, transforming this waste into sculptures. He secretly created the Rock Garden in a forested area, turning 5 hectares of land into an artistic and ecological site. The garden was discovered by authorities in 1975, after which it was officially recognized and opened to the public. Today, the Rock Garden spans 16 hectares and includes over 2000 sculptures. Nek Chand is renowned for his innovative approach to environmental art and his creative use of recycled materials, making him an iconic figure in Indian art and architecture. He passed away on June 12, 2015, in Chandigarh. |
