king Norodom

King Norodom (1834-1904) was the first modern monarch of Cambodia under French protection. His reign, from 1860 to 1904, marked a pivotal period in the country's history, during which he played a crucial role in preserving the Cambodian monarchy.

King Norodom, born in 1834, ascended to the Cambodian throne in 1860. His reign was defined by the establishment of the French protectorate in 1863, a treaty he signed to maintain his kingdom's autonomy while avoiding Siamese or Vietnamese dominance. Despite French influence, Norodom retained significant authority over Cambodia's internal affairs. He played a key role in consolidating the monarchy and organizing the country's administration, while promoting the development of modern infrastructure. Many cultural and architectural projects were initiated during his reign, including the construction of the Silver Pagoda within the Royal Palace. King Norodom passed away in 1904, leaving behind a lasting legacy that shaped the Cambodian monarchy. His son, Sisowath, succeeded him on the throne.
