| Johann Ludwig Burckhardt | Johann Ludwig Burckhardt was a Swiss explorer famous for rediscovering the ancient city of Petra in 1812, a site forgotten by Europeans for centuries. Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817) was a Swiss explorer, also known as Sheikh Ibrahim Ibn Abdallah. After studying in London, he undertook several expeditions to the Middle East and North Africa, funded by the African Association. His most notable achievement occurred in 1812 when he rediscovered the city of Petra in Jordan, which had been forgotten by European travelers for centuries. Burckhardt disguised himself as an Arab pilgrim to gain access to Petra, adopting the name Sheikh Ibrahim. His accounts of Petra and other travels were published posthumously, and he remains a key figure in European exploration of the Middle East. |
