Ekambaranathar

Ekambaranathar is an aspect of the Hindu deity Shiva, primarily worshiped at the temple of the same name in Kanchipuram, India. The name refers to "the lord of the mango tree," a title linked to an ancient legend of devotion.

Ekambaranathar, meaning "the Lord of the single mango tree," is an incarnation of Shiva celebrated at the Kanchipuram temple. According to legend, the goddess Parvati, Shiva’s wife, worshipped Shiva in the form of a lingam made of sand, under a mango tree. This act of devotion following a dispute with Shiva gave rise to the name and sanctification of the site. Moved by Parvati's devotion, Shiva appeared to her as Ekambaranathar, promising never to leave her. Thus, Shiva and Parvati are often seen as perfect examples of familial devotion, with Parvati also revered here as Kamakshi.
