| Chettiar | The Chettiars, or Chettiar, are a merchant and banking community from Tamil Nadu, India, known for their historical role in trade and finance in Southeast Asia. The Chettiars are a Tamil community originating from the Chettinad region in Tamil Nadu, India. Renowned for their expertise in trade and finance, the Chettiars played a crucial role in the economy of India and Southeast Asia from the 19th century to the early 20th century. They established extensive commercial and financial networks, particularly in Burma (Myanmar), Malaysia, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and Indonesia. The Chettiars are also known for their distinctive architecture, with opulent mansions in Chettinad built using imported materials such as Italian marble and Japanese tiles. These houses are often adorned with intricate carvings and precious wood. The prosperity of the Chettiars also contributed to the construction of numerous temples, schools, and other public infrastructure in their native region. Although their influence declined with decolonization and economic changes in the 20th century, the Chettiars remain a respected and influential community. |
