Avanti

Avanti was an ancient kingdom located in what is now Madhya Pradesh in central India, and was one of the sixteen mahājanapadas mentioned in early Buddhist and Jain texts of the 6th century BCE.

The kingdom of Avanti was centered in the Narmadā River valley, with two major capitals: Ujjayinī (modern Ujjain) and Māhishmatī. Strategically situated in central India, it served as a vital link in trade routes between northern and southern India. Avanti was one of the sixteen mahājanapadas, the major political entities that emerged after the Vedic period.

Ujjayinī developed into a prominent cultural, religious, and commercial center. Avanti was notable for its early patronage of Jainism and its association with Buddhism. Its ruler, King Pradyota, was a key political figure who maintained relations with neighboring states, including Magadha. Eventually, Avanti was annexed by Magadha under the rule of either Bimbisara or Ajatashatru, marking its integration into a larger imperial structure.
