Vastu Shastra, literally meaning "science of architecture" in Sanskrit, is an ancient Indian practice dating back several millennia. Based on principles similar to geomancy, this discipline aims to harmonize the energy of buildings with natural forces such as earth, water, fire, air, and space. Inspired by the Vedas, Vastu Shastra provides detailed guidelines on the orientation, layout, and design of residential, commercial, and religious structures. Key concepts include the orientation of rooms relative to the cardinal directions, the placement of doors and windows to maximize natural light and ventilation, and the use of specific materials to build in harmony with nature. As a relative practice to geomancy and a precursor to Chinese Feng Shui, Vastu Shastra is still practiced in India and elsewhere, influencing the design of modern buildings while respecting ancestral traditions.
