Tsechu

Tsechu is an annual Buddhist festival celebrated in Bhutan and parts of India and Nepal, commemorating significant events in the life of Guru Rinpoche, the patron saint of Tibetan Buddhism.

Tsechu festivals are traditionally held on the tenth day of a month of the Tibetan lunar calendar and can last several days. These celebrations are known for their colorful cham dances, where monks and laypeople wearing detailed masks and elaborate costumes perform ritual dances. These dances are believed to bestow blessings upon the viewers and ward off evil spirits. The festival also serves as an important social gathering, strengthening community ties through shared meals, games, and exchanges. Each region has its own variations of Tsechu, each with its own local dances and traditions.
