Term Definition
thangka

A thangka is a Tibetan Buddhist painting on fabric, primarily used for meditation and ritual purposes.

A thangka is more than just an artwork; it serves as an object of devotion, a meditation aid, and a teaching tool in Buddhism. These paintings are traditionally made on cotton or silk with pigments derived from minerals and plants. Thangkas typically depict Buddhist deities, mythological scenes, or mandalas, each imbued with deep symbolism intended to elevate the viewer’s mind to higher states of consciousness. The process of creating a thangka is itself considered a form of meditation. Besides their spiritual role, thangkas also act as historical documents conveying information about the cultural, spiritual, and social life of Himalayan regions.
