Term Definition
sadhu

Sadhu refers to an ascetic or holy man in the Hindu tradition, often seen in temples or during pilgrimages. They lead a life of renunciation, dedicated to spirituality and meditation.

A Sadhu is a Hindu ascetic who has renounced material life to dedicate themselves fully to spirituality. Sadhus can belong to various religious traditions, primarily Shaivism (worshiping Shiva) and Vaishnavism (worshiping Vishnu). They often live in ashrams (spiritual centers) or wander as mendicants, practicing austere rituals, meditation, and yoga. Their lifestyle is characterized by simplicity, asceticism, and an intense quest for spiritual liberation (moksha). Although their appearance may vary, they are often recognizable by their saffron robes, long matted hair, and religious marks on their foreheads. Sadhus play an important role in preserving and disseminating spiritual practices in India.
